Push Ads Guide: Definitive Guide For Marketers 2024 (150% ROI)

Have you ever seen those small pop-up ads that appear on websites? Those are called Push Ads, and guess what?

They’re a big deal for making money online, especially for advertisers and people who work with ads.

Push Ads are really good at grabbing your attention in different ways – they can be surprising, fun, or just really interesting. That’s why they can sometimes make more money than other types of online ads.

But here’s the thing: if you don’t use Push Ads the right way, you might either get a lot of new customers or none at all. That’s why I’m here to help you out.

I’ve got a guide that’ll show you how Push Ads can be a game-changer for your marketing goals. Let’s take a closer look at how we can make the most of them!

What are Push Ads?

Push ads are a type of advertisements that appear as notifications on your device. There are two main types of push ads:

Web Push Notifications: These are notifications sent to users who have chosen to receive these ads. For example, you might get a notification from a website you subscribed to for updates.

In-Page Push: These are notifications that appear when you are visiting a website that uses this ad format. They pop up while you’re on the site.

Push ads are considered user-friendly because they don’t interrupt what you’re doing like some other ads. They can be quite engaging, meaning people are more likely to click on them.

One great thing about push ads is that they usually don’t have fake (bot) traffic, and they can reach people all over the world. They also tend to get more clicks and lead to more actions like buying something or signing up for a service compared to other types of ads.

Web Push Notifications vs In-Page Push Ads

Web Push Notifications and In-Page Push Ads are two different ways to show ads on the internet. Let’s break down how they work and what makes them different:

Aspect Web Push Notifications In-Page Push Ads
Delivery Method Sent directly by websites to subscribers’ devices. Appear as notifications but are actually banner ads on a website.
Appearance Resemble mobile app push notifications; work on all devices. It looks like notifications but is displayed on a website; it also works on all devices.
Subscription Requirement Users need to subscribe willingly to receive them. No subscription is required; they appear when you visit a website using them.
Intrusiveness Generally non-intrusive as users opt-in to receive them. They are less intrusive as they only appear on the specific website using them.
Affected by Browser Blocking It may be affected by browser settings (e.g., Chrome subscription blocking). Not affected by browser subscription blocking; less restricted.
Frequency It can be delivered throughout the day. Shown to users when they visit a specific website.
Traffic Quality Typically, high-quality traffic is due to user opt-in. Generates high-quality traffic with potential for clicks and conversions.
Pricing Models N/A (Primarily used for engagement and content delivery). Supports various pricing models, including CPM, CPC, and CPA.

Web Push Notifications:

  • These are ads that websites send directly to people who have agreed to receive them. It’s like getting a message from a website on your device.
  • They look similar to notifications from mobile apps but are delivered through websites and work on all devices (like desktop computers, phones, and tablets).
  • They are generally non-intrusive because you only get them if you’ve subscribed to them willingly.
  • One drawback is that some browsers, like Google Chrome, might block subscription requests for these notifications.

In-Page Push Ads:

  • These are ads that look like notifications but are actually banner ads on a website. They are designed to perform well, like push notifications, but they have some advantages.
  • Unlike Web Push notifications, you don’t need to subscribe to get them. They pop up when you visit a website that uses them.
  • Because they don’t require subscriptions, they are not affected by Chrome’s subscription blocking or other similar restrictions.
  • They are less intrusive because they only appear when you’re on a specific website, so they won’t bother you all day long like Web Push notifications might.

Push Ads Guide: Definitive Guide For Marketers 2024 (150% ROI)

Chapter 1: Introduction To Push Ads

Unless you live under a rock, you have likely seen at least one form of Push Ad.

Push Ads are pretty much any notification you receive on your mobile phone through an app or on your desktop through a browser like Chrome. However, not all of these notifications are important or wanted.

Some are paid advertisements by an app where you can opt-in to receive notifications of all their ads, too.

To make this idea easier to understand, I will discuss the two forms of Push Notifications in greater detail.

Desktop Notification

Various browsers provide a notification function. We will focus only on Chrome today because it has around 63% market share worldwide as of June 2019.

In the Chrome desktop, it looks something like this:

Chrome desktop - Push Ads Guide

There are probably hundreds of millions (if not billions) of notifications sent by Chrome every month, and this number is increasing every day.

You should start using desktop notification Push Ads for your business before it is too late!

Native App Notification

You get these notifications on your mobile phone probably tens of times every day – from meeting reminders to email notifications to pick up your kids, or…the list goes on and on.

As mentioned previously, you can also receive advertisements through those notifications like this one:

The famous native apps are:

  • Apple iOS
  • Google Android
  • Amazon Fire
  • Windows
  • MacOS

Why should you care about Push Ads?

Every once in a while, a new source of advertising comes out that people do not yet realize is an advertisement. Do you remember ad banners? They used to have a click-through rate (CTR) of 70%. Now you’re lucky to get 1%.

Why?

People have gotten used to seeing banners on every website. No more excitement. People knew the banner was just an advertisement.

The same thing happened with Facebook Newsfeed ads, Google search ads, and so on.

Now, the latest advertising platform is Push Ads. Very few people know about it, but smart marketers and affiliates are taking full advantage of it.

If you are reading this post, consider yourself lucky because you are about to enter into a new advertisement era before many other people.

Chapter 2: Build Your Own List

Whether you have a website or not, you should read this chapter. Here, we will discuss how you can create and build your subscription list for Push Notification.

If you know a thing or two about online marketing, you may have heard the phrase, “The money is on the list.” That is still correct and valid now.

However, the list does not mean an email list anymore. Nowadays, you can build your list in any of the following platforms:

  • Facebook Messenger
  • Push Notifications
  • SMS
  • WhatsApp
  • .. and more

How to build a list?

There are so many plugins and codes you can use to do so. The famous and reputable ones are:

  1. OneSignal
  2. SendPlus
  3. Gleantap
  4. OmniKick

I will show you today how to use one of them to help you get started immediately.

This will work for all desktop browsers that accept Push Notifications and Android phones with Chrome browsers.

Apple allows Push Notifications through apps only and not browsers.

OneSignal is my favorite Push Notification service. I have no affiliation or association with it. OneSignal is pretty awesome and easy to use. And did I mention that it’s FREE?

It supports HTTP and https.

It is integrated with many Website Builders and CMS

Chapter 3: Buy Push Ads (Traffic)

This chapter is dedicated to buying Push Ads from other websites to promote your messages/offers.

This is an advertisement chapter – it is like you are buying traffic from Google, Facebook, Native, etc.

Here, I will show you how you can buy push traffic for your website or your offer if you are an affiliate marketer.

If you do not know about affiliate marketing yet, I strongly advise you to read this piece: How to start affiliate marketing without a website.

Many traffic sources provide Push Ads. The big players are:

  1. Ad-maven
  2. iZooto
  3. Push Monetization
  4. Propeller Ads
  5. MegaPu.sh
  6. Richpush

RichPush is the high-quality push traffic ad network for performance marketers (I have been trying this recently & it works pretty well; the case study will be live soon)

Mobile and Desktop Push Notifications

Mobile Push Notifications:

These are little messages that pop up on your phone or tablet. They come from the apps you’ve installed and agreed to get notifications from.

Even when you’re not using the app, you can still get these messages. They’re like little reminders or updates that show up right on your screen.

For example, a shopping app might send you a notification about a sale, or a news app might tell you about a breaking news story. Each type of phone, like iPhones (iOS) and Android phones, has its own way of sending these notifications.

Desktop Push Notifications:

These are similar to mobile push notifications, but they show up on your computer. It doesn’t matter what kind of computer you’re using or what operating system it has.

They work pretty much the same way as mobile notifications. You might see them for things like new emails, updates from a website, or reminders.

It’s important to remember that not all push notifications are ads. Many of them are just messages from your phone’s operating system or updates from apps you have installed.

The way these regular notifications are sent is different from how Web Push advertising (those ads that pop up while you’re browsing the internet) works. So, when you see a notification pop up, it could be an ad, but it could also just be a helpful message from an app you use.

Benefits of Push Ads

Push Ads offer several advantages for advertisers, making them an appealing choice for digital marketing campaigns. Here are the advantages explained in detail, along with examples:

Better Performance and Personalized Creatives:

  • Unique Appearance: Push Ads resemble standard mobile app push notifications, instantly capturing the user’s attention. For example, an e-commerce website can send a push notification about a limited-time sale, making it look like a personal alert.
  • Personalization: Advertisers can customize push ads with relevant information such as names, locations, holidays, colors, or occasions. For instance, a travel agency could send a personalized push notification to users interested in beach vacations, mentioning a special discount for a specific destination.

Example: An online food delivery platform sends a push notification with the user’s name, suggesting their favorite dishes are available at a discounted price during a weekend promotion.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Creative Piracy: Copying push notification creatives from competitors without customization can lead to a lack of uniqueness.
  • Sending Too Many Notifications: Overloading users with frequent notifications can reduce click-through rates (CTR) and annoy them.
  • Uploading Only One Creative: Running A/B tests with multiple creatives is crucial for optimizing push ad performance.

Total Ad Placement Visibility:

  • Prominent Position: Push Ads appear in the user’s center of attention, often above other tabs or content on both desktop and mobile devices.
  • Mimicking Messenger Alerts: On mobile devices, push ads mimic personal alerts from messenger apps, making them highly noticeable.

Example: An online fashion retailer’s push ad appears on a user’s screen, imitating a message notification, showcasing the latest collection, and offering a limited-time discount.

Cost-Effective:

  • Affordable: Push Ads tend to be more budget-friendly compared to advertising on platforms like Facebook or in-app marketing channels.
  • Low CPA: Despite the lack of detailed interest-based targeting, push ads can deliver conversions at a low Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) for popular verticals.

Example: An affiliate marketer promotes a fitness app using push ads and achieves a low CPA by targeting users interested in health and fitness, even though the targeting isn’t as precise as on other platforms.

Few Bots:

  • Real User Traffic: Advanced ad networks often use third-party services to verify push traffic, ensuring it comes from real users and not bots.
  • Subscribed Audience: Some users actively subscribe to receive push notifications, indicating genuine interest in the content.

Example: A news website sends push notifications with the latest headlines to subscribers who have opted in to receive news updates, ensuring the audience’s authenticity.

Where Does the Push Traffic Come From?

Push traffic primarily comes from users who interact with Web Push notification ads. This traffic is unique because these users have willingly agreed to receive these notifications, indicating a higher likelihood of conversion.

Let’s delve into how push traffic is generated:

1. Enabling Notification Popups:

Publishers, the owners of websites, enable “Allow Notifications” popups on their sites. These popups prompt website visitors to subscribe to web push notifications.

When a user visits a website with this feature enabled, they may see a popup asking if they want to receive web push notifications from the site.

Example: Imagine you visit an online news website, and a popup appears asking if you want to receive breaking news notifications from that site. If you agree, you become a subscriber.

2. Grouping and Segmentation:

Publishers collect the names of users who have subscribed to their web push notifications. These names are added to a special list.

Lists of subscribers are often grouped or segmented based on various criteria, such as how long someone has been a subscriber.

More recent subscriptions are often considered more valuable.

Example: The news website collects the names of users who subscribed to their notifications in the last month. They may also have a separate list for users who subscribed more than six months ago.

3. Advertiser Targeting:

Advertisers, such as Creative Mobile in the example, can choose to target specific lists of subscribers based on their preferences and campaign goals.

For instance, Creative Mobile, a game publisher, might decide to target users who agreed to receive push notifications from a game-themed website three months ago.

Those users who subscribed within that specified time frame will receive push ads from Creative Mobile.

Example: Creative Mobile’s latest game is launching, and they want to reach users who have shown an interest in gaming by subscribing to relevant websites’ push notifications.

4. In-Page Push Ads:

In-Page Push ads work differently from Web Push notifications. They do not require user subscription. Instead, they are displayed as banner-like ads on websites without the need for prior consent.

Users who visit a website that uses In-Page Push ads will see these ads as part of the website’s content.

Example: You visit an online shopping website, and as you browse products, you see small notification-style ads popping up at the bottom of the page, showcasing special deals and products. These are In-Page Push ads.

How to Choose Your Push Ads Traffic Source?

To succeed in push advertising, it’s crucial to understand your target audience within your chosen niche and create compelling offers or promotions that resonate with their interests and needs.

Tailoring your push ads to meet user expectations and providing valuable offers can lead to higher engagement and conversions.

Here are some of the questions that you can ask and get the answers to:

1. Does a traffic source provide push traffic ad formats?

This question is about checking whether the chosen traffic source offers the specific ad formats needed for push advertising.

Push traffic ad formats are essential for running push ad campaigns effectively. These formats are designed to resemble push notifications, making them attractive to users.

2. How much Push Ads traffic can you expect from a traffic network?

Here, you want to know the amount of push traffic a traffic network can provide. This information helps you estimate how many people your ad can reach and plan your campaign strategy accordingly. A network that can share this data is helpful for planning.

3. How much would a push traffic campaign with your preferred traffic source cost?

This question involves budgeting for your push traffic campaign. You should calculate your spending plan, including the testing phase, which is essential to optimize your campaign. Knowing the average bid prices and expected costs helps you prepare financially.

4. What are the ad network’s rules and regulations?

It’s crucial to understand the rules and regulations of the chosen traffic source. This is particularly important for compliance with advertising standards and laws. Knowing what is allowed and what is not will help you create ads that won’t get rejected.

5. Is it a reliable source of traffic for push advertising campaigns?

Reliability is a key factor. You want to ensure that the traffic source you choose is trustworthy and free from unethical practices. Transparency and openness in their operations are indicators of a reliable network.

6. Does a push traffic ad network have an easy-to-use platform?

The ease of using the traffic source’s platform matters. You should feel comfortable navigating and using the tools they provide. An intuitive platform can save you time and make your campaign management smoother.

7. Can a traffic source be integrated with other platforms?

Integration capability is important, especially when you want to use other tools like tracking software to monitor the performance of your ad campaign. You need to confirm that the traffic source can work seamlessly with these additional tools.

How to Create High-converting Push Ads?

Creating high-converting Push Ads involves several key elements and strategies. Here’s a simple explanation of each aspect:

1. Use Simple Yet Attractive Images:

Images are crucial in capturing users’ attention. Choose images that are visually appealing but not too complex. Avoid overcrowding the image with text, as there’s space for text elsewhere in the ad. Some ideas for images include happy people, bright colors, before-and-after comparisons, or results.

2. Consider Using Icons:

Icons are essential for mobile traffic as they help convey information quickly. A well-designed icon can significantly boost click-through rates. Opt for a single, large, and simple object without too many details or colors in the icon.

3. Keep the Ad Title Concise:

On mobile screens, brevity is key. Your ad title should convey the message in just 3 to 4 words. It should immediately tell users what you’re offering or promoting.

4. Create a Compelling Description:

The ad description is your last chance to convince users to take action. Those who were intrigued by the image or title but need more information will read the description. Make it creative and persuasive.

5. Use Colors Effectively:

Colors play a significant role in conveying emotions and messages. Choose colors that match the mood and message of your ad. For example, red can signal urgency or excitement, while black and white give a clean and sophisticated look. Tailor your color choices to the occasion or theme.

6. Add Emojis (Optional):

Emojis can add a touch of humor and emotion to your Push Ads. However, use them sparingly and don’t overdo it. Emojis can be eye-catching and enhance the message, but keep your overall text concise.

7. Research and Learn from Competitors:

Utilize spying tools to gain insights into what your competitors are doing. While it’s essential to stay informed about industry trends, avoid copying competitors outright. Instead, use this information for research and inspiration to improve your own ad campaigns.
